Rc Battery Packs

When considering what type of hobby battery pack to purchase, for a radio controlled model, there are 3 basic types of RC battery packs that can be used with todays RC models; NiCad, NiMH, and LiPo. NiCad or NiCd battery packs are made of nickel and cadmium; these batteries are made of nickel oxide hydroxide and metallic cadmium. They are excellent for hobby use, and are more durable, and harder to damage than other types. And in most cases, will take a greater number of charge/discharge cycles. When storing these types of RC battery packs they should be fully discharged. NiMH is an abbreviation for nickel-metal hydride; these batteries are similar to NiCads, but a hydrogen-absorbing alloy is used for the negative electrode in place of cadmium.

When storing these types of RC battery packs they should be fully discharged. NiMH is an abbreviation for nickel-metal hydride; these batteries are similar to NiCads, but a hydrogen-absorbing alloy is used for the negative electrode in place of cadmium. With these types of RC battery packs care must be taken not to fully discharge it. This can result in a polarity reversal, which can damage it permanently. The newest type of RC battery packs, and the most expensive, is the LiPo or Lithium Polymer. This new technology is making battery powered flight an option to fuel power. These are ideal for hobby use, as they are light weight, have large capacities, and a high discharge rate. LiPo battery packs use a thin polymer instead of liquid for an electrolyte. With this method they can be made very thin, and in different shapes.

With this method they can be made very thin, and in different shapes. However, they dont last as long as other types and they are harder to care for. And they are more likely to catch fire, or explode than other types, especially while on the charger. For most hobby applications the type of RC battery packs used is a flexible matter. And having multiple RC batteries will allow you to keep on flying, or driving while other another battery pack is on the charger.
